フレットワーク・エディションについて

フレットワーク・エディションは、英国の演奏団体であるフレットワークが、そのガンバ・コンソートの演奏に用いた音楽を普及しようと、１９８９年から出版を始めたものです。最初のカベソンの曲集はヴァージン・クラシックのＣＤ「アルマダ《（VBD 5618212）、第３集はバードのコンソート・ソング（VBD 561612）にも使われています。その後、コンソート音楽の分野で優れた業績を挙げているリチャード・チャーテリス、デビッド・ピント、アンドルー・アシュビーなどの音楽学者が参加し、出版は急速に拡大し現在のような豊かなコンソート音楽のレパートリーとなりました。

フレットワーク・エディションは当初から、楽曲解説、演奏上の問題、原典の批判的検討などについて、学問的に高い水準をめざしていました。それだけではなく、楽譜が容易に読め、ページめくりへの配慮もなされて、演奏しやすい楽譜になっています。その結果、主要図書館に備え付けられたばかりではなく、パーセル・カルテット、ファンタズム、ロンドン・バロック、ジェラルド・レスン、キャスリン・ボットなど、第一線の演奏家のコンサートにもしばしば用いられています。

デビッド・ピントの編集による、オルランド・ギボンズのコンソート・アンセム全曲は、コンソート音楽の中でも、特に注目に値する曲集です。

ギボンズのコンソートアンセム全曲を演奏に使える形でという出版企画は当初上可能と思われていましたが、デビッド・ピントが編者となり英国ビオラ・ダ・ガンバ協会の財政的支援とピーター・バーグの助けを得てようやくに完成しました。

ギボンズのコンソート・アンセムの水準の高さは改めて言うまでもなく、編者デビッド・ピントの言葉を借りれば「神秘的なまでに高い密度の曲《です。

コレクションは３集からなり、各集にはいずれも４曲のアンセムが入っています。アンセムは主に宗教曲ですが、世俗のアンセムもあります。全１２曲のうち、１１曲にはコンソートのパート譜が残っていましたが、一部パートが欠けているものもありそれらは復元されています（このほかにオルガン・パートしか残っていない曲があります。オルガン・パートからパート譜を復元することはかなりの確度で可能なので、それを用いて第４集の出版も計画されています）。

数多いコンソート曲の中でも、この曲集は一際目立つ存在です。今回の出版では各パートの譜めくりのしやすさや、調性も勘案して、実用的な楽譜にしてあります（全音ないし４度上げたパート譜も、早い時期に用意する予定です）。ギボンズのコンソート・アンセムは本来は歌うための曲ですが、純粋のコンソート曲としても楽しめます。

序文では、教会アンセムの楽譜のコレクションで大変重要なオックスフォードのクライスト・チャーチのスコアについて述べています。そのスコアはそのまま演奏には使えない問題があり、そのことが詳しく説明されています。また歌詞について、あるいは作曲の背後にある教会内部の政治的動きなど、興味深い話題にも触れています。
